Science-Based Targets: On Target?

Companies are increasingly seeking to align their actions with the goals of Paris Agreement. Over 1000 such companies have committed science-based targets initiative which seeks corporate carbon reduction global decarbonisation trajectories. These ‘science-based targets’ developed using a common set resources and target-setting methodologies, then independently assessed approved by technical advisory group. Despite initiative’s rapid rise public prominence, it has received little attention date in academic literature. This paper discusses development based upon quantitative assessment progress against each component 81 early adopters, information gathered from company annual reports, social responsibility websites Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) responses. The analysis reveals mixed picture progress. Though majority were on track and, some cases, had already been achieved, just under half falling behind one or more targets. Progress varied significantly target scope, limited focused Scope 3 emissions. Company reporting practices highly variable often poor quality. concludes range recommendations improve transparency, consistency comparability within this key agenda-setting initiative.
